Agricultural plastics recycling roundups coming this spring

Cleanfarms and the Agricultural Plastics Recycling Group are hosting a series of free ag plastics recycling roundups throughout Alberta this spring.

Clearwater County:

• May 12: Central Transfer Station, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
• May 13: Caroline Transfer Station, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Starland County:

• June 13: Michichi Transfer Station, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Lac La Biche County:

• June 27: The Bold Centre, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Items accepted for collection: grain bags, twine, bale wrap, and silage plastic.

All other materials (e.g. barbed wire, wood, empty chemical containers, used oil, tires, etc.) will be turned away.

In 2019, a pilot program, ‘Alberta Ag-Plastic. Recycle It!’, launched in Alberta to collect used grain bags and baler twine for recycling. With funds granted by the Government of Alberta and administered by Alberta Beef Producers, the pilot is spearheaded by the multi-stakeholder Agricultural Plastics Recycling Group (APRG) and operated by Cleanfarms.

Through a separate, federally funded pilot program called ‘Building a Zero-Plastic-Waste Strategy for Agriculture’, Alberta farmers in select regions can recycle bale wrap (stretch wrap for silage and haylage bales) and silage plastic (silo bags, tarps, and bunker covers) with Cleanfarms.

Both programs give farmers an environmentally responsible way to manage these used ag plastics.
