Government of Canada commits $100 million to AgriRecovery

In response to the extraordinary costs faced by producers through drought and wildfires, the Government of Canada is making available $100 million through the AgriRecovery Framework.

“There are a lot of farm families across the West and in parts of Ontario who are making tough decisions in a difficult situation,” said Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Marie-Claude Bibeau. “Our Government is working closely with our provincial partners to provide timely support to producers in need. Today we are announcing $100 million to add to provincial AgriRecovery initiatives, ready to be delivered as quickly as we can turn around provincial submissions, and ready to seek further funding for requests exceeding this amount. We will continue to support farm families to get them through the challenges we face today, and position them for a sustainable future, since we know climate change will continue to pose challenges.”

The Government of Canada is working with their provincial counterparts in Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia in completing assessments of the disaster. Once assessments are complete, agreements will be made with each province to develop support programs.

“Severe drought conditions, sustained high temperatures, and wildfires continue to create stress and uncertainty for our producers. That is why the Government of Canada is taking action to secure funding under AgriRecovery, to ensure continuous support is provided to farmers as quickly as possible.”

– The Honourable Jim Carr, Minister and Special Representative for the Prairies and Member of Parliament for Winnipeg South Centre

In addition, the Government of Canada and the Governments of Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba have increased the 2021 AgriStability interim benefit payment percentage from 50 percent to 75 percent.

Minister Bibeau also announced the expansion of areas designated eligible for the 2021 Livestock Tax Deferral.

The funding is designed to match provincial AgriRecovery submissions on a 60-40 cost-shared basis, as outlined under the Canadian Agricultural Partnership.
