Provinces across the country are announcing further support to livestock producers impacted by drought. Here are some announcements and reactions released this week.


Saskatchewan commits over $100 million in drought support to livestock producers

With drought burning off pastures, drying water sources and raising feed costs, Saskatchewan’s provincial government pledged $119 million in drought relief to livestock producers.

“We are acting swiftly to support Saskatchewan producers in retaining their breeding herd,” said David Marit, Saskatchewan’s agriculture minister.

AgriRecovery Funding to Help Saskatchewan Livestock Producers

Today, Agriculture Minister David Marit announced $119 million in direct support for drought-affected cattle producers under the AgriRecovery program.  The program will provide a per head payment to help maintain breeding stock.  This financial relief will help producers with extraordinary costs caused by drought, such as accessing feed and water.

Today the Honourable David Marit, Minister of Agriculture and Minister for Saskatchewan Crop Insurance, on behalf of the Government of Saskatchewan, announced a commitment of $119 million in direct support for drought affected cattle producers under the AgriRecovery program. The program will provide a per head payment to help maintain breeding stock by providing cash to help offset the extraordinary costs producers have incurred this year to purchase feed and access water. The federal government is requested to provide an additional $178 million for a total program of $297 million.

Stock Growers Welcome AgriRecovery Assistance

Release by Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association

The Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association (SSGA) says the provincial government’s announcement of support for livestock producers who are facing disastrous drought conditions is welcome news.

Today Agriculture Minister David Marit announced the province will provide $119 million in direct support under the federal/provincial AgriRecovery program.  The SSGA is urging the federal government to put forward its 60 per cent share of the funding, which would bring the total to $297 million.

Manitoba commits $62 million to AgriRecovery drought-relief programs

The Manitoba government says it will commit $62 million in provincial funding to AgriRecovery programs to help livestock producers affected by this year’s drought.

While details were not included in the August 10 announcement, Agriculture Minister Ralph Eichler says the programs will be designed to “ensure producers have options to retain and care for their animals while also supporting the longer-term sustainability of the livestock sector.”
