Alberta coal policy engagement is now open

The Government of Alberta has released details on the public consultation to inform the development of a modern coal policy. An initial survey to help inform next steps is available online for Albertans to share their thoughts until April 19.

An independent committee has been appointed to develop and lead the public engagement process. Ron Wallace will chair the committee and is an internationally recognized expert in regulatory policies associated with environmental assessment and monitoring. Other members include: Fred Bradley, former MLA for Pincher Creek-Crowsnest and Alberta minister of the environment; Natalie Charlton, Executive Director at Hinton and District Chamber of Commerce; Bill Trafford, President of the Livingstone Landowners’ Group; and Eric North Peigan, a small business owner and a member of Pikanii First Nation. 

Following the engagement process, a final report providing recommendations on the development of a modern coal policy will be delivered to the Minister of Energy by November 15.

As a result of the reinstatement of the 1976 Coal Policy, all restrictions under the coal categories, which set where and how coal leasing, exploration and development can occur, are in place. At this time, no mountain top removal is permitted and future coal exploration approvals on Category 2 lands are prohibited, while coal lease sales on these lands also remain paused.
